How I Work
My therapeutic approach is eclectic, drawing on a number of different evidence-based modalities. I like to view therapy as having three components - each client will need a different mix of the three.
1. The Therapeutic Relationship
Building a trusting relationship with a therapist, feeling listened to, validated and understood, and feeling safe to explore sensitive topics, while getting in touch with your own inner wisdom - these elements alone can often help people move forward in their life. This is the foundation of my therapeutic style, and it is based on techniques from Person Centred Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
2. Targeted Strategies
Most people can benefit from specific techniques which can help with issues in their day to day life. These issues may include anxiety, anger, stress, overwhelm, emotion dysregulation, low mood, low self-worth, impulsivity, disorganisation, distractibility, procrastination, or insomnia. The strategies are drawn from CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) and Compassion Focused Therapy.
3. Deeper Processing
For many people, it is important to address the root causes of their current symptoms. This may involve revisiting painful or traumatic memories in a transformational way - perhaps through EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) or Imagery Rescripting. Or it may involve developing deeper insight and awareness through Schema Therapy, CBT or mindfulness techniques.
